People with disabilities continue to face barriers in everyday life, from boarding a bus to surfing the internet. For the 80 million Europeans with a disability – one out of six people – accessibility, employment, inclusion and education are key areas. The European Commission today adopted a new strategy to empower people with disabilities so they can enjoy their rights, with actions ranging from EU-wide recognition of national disability cards to a more targeted use of public procurement and state aid rules. The Commission may also propose a European Accessibility Act in 2012 to further the Single Market for accessible products and services."To fully participate in our society and economy, people with disabilities need to have easier access to public buildings, public transport and digital services,” said Vice-President Reding, EU Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship.
