Twenty-six cases of oral vaccine-derived polioviruses are confirmed in DR Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing a new polio epidemic across the country where twenty-six cases of oral vaccine-derived polioviruses are confirmed, including two cases in Maniema province, nine in Upper Katanga province and one in De Mongala.

Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) can mutate into circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV). Like outbreaks of wild poliovirus, cVDPV outbreaks only can be stopped with high-quality immunisations campaigns.
